Aptima SARS-CoV-2 

The Aptima SARS-CoV-2 test is the molecular test used to determine if an individual currently has an active SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) infection. We have partnered with Hologic for molecular identification of SARS-CoV-2 RNA utilizing their Panther system and found this testing platform to provide excellent sensitivity and specificity for viral detection.

SARS-CoV-2 Total Antibodies

The ADVIA Centaur SARS-CoV-2 Total Antibody assay detects total antibodies (combined IgM/IgG) from blood specimens that are generated as part of the adaptive human immune response to the COVID-19 virus indicating recent or prior infection.

This test has been authorized only for the presence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, not for any other viruses or pathogens. This test is only authorized for the duration of the declaration that circumstances exist justifying the authorization of emergency use of in vitro diagnostics for detection and/or diagnosis of COVID-19 under Section 564(b)(1) of the Act, 21 U.S.C. § 360bbb-3(b)(1), unless the authorization is terminated or revoked sooner.

THESE GUIDELINES ARE DURING THE PUBLIC EMERGENCY AND WILL BE UPDATED AS NECESSARY.

Will patients be billed for COVID-19 testing?

During the pandemic, patients will not be billed for COVID-19 testing. The Families First legislation as amended by the CARES Act requires all health plans to provide coverage of COVID-19 testing without cost share. Per guidance from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Department of Labor and the Department of the Treasury, all Commercial and Medicaid plans must cover serological (antibody) testing with no cost-sharing.

 

If a patient is uninsured and has no insurance coverage, will they be billed?

Uninsured patients will not be billed during the public emergency, assuming the COVID uninsured form is provided. Within the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act (P.L. 116-136), which provides $100 billion in relief funds to healthcare providers, a portion of the funding will be used to support healthcare-related expenses attributable to the treatment of uninsured individuals with COVID-19. This includes paying providers for uninsured patients who receive COVID-19 testing.

 

What documentation is needed to verify a patient is uninsured?

ProPath has created a COVID Certification of Uninsured Patient Form for patients to complete. The form includes the requirement of needing either the patient’s SS# or Drivers’ License# for ProPath to bill the government and receive uninsured funding during the pandemic. This form should be sent to ProPath along with the requisition and specimen.

Will ProPath honor clinicians requesting Professional Courtesy or Client Billing for COVID testing on themselves or their immediate family members.

Since there is no patient cost share during the public emergency, ProPath’s policies for professional courtesy and client billing will not apply. Insurance information should be submitted so ProPath can submit a claim and be paid in full for performing the COVID-19 test during the pandemic only.

 

Will patients be billed if ProPath is out-of-network with the insurance?

During the public emergency, there should be no patient cost share, regardless of network status. If a provider is out-of-network with a health plan, the CARES Act requires the plan to fully reimburse the provider based on the provider’s own “cash price” (or a lower price if the plan can negotiate one).
